Do small daily actions lead to unpredictable outcomes?
This week, I've been struck by how small daily actions can lead to unpredictable outcomes in consultancy business development.
What got me on track was these two examples of networking:
Example #1
A change management consultant decided to try something different: they wrote a daily email to respected peers in their field, expressing appreciation for their work, without expecting anything in return.
They reached out to John Kotter (a rockstar level thought leader in business, leadership, and change) and got a reply with some useful tips.
This consultant has gone on to become a recognised voice in the field.
Example #2
Inspired by Seth Godin, another consultant wrote a book to connect with hard to reach prospects, a strategy that proved highly successful.
They decided to share the result with Seth, along with a copy of the book and a thank you note. Seth responded with further encouragement.
And this consultant has gone on to become a recognised voice in their arena too.
Both these consultants built valuable, productive, networks way beyond these celebrity connections. And all because they took consistent action.
But this is not a memo about networking. It's about seeing patterns that you can model for success. Small daily actions that might lead to unpredictable results.
With that in mind, here are 7 ideas for things you might do daily as a consultancy business developer. Each one would take under 15 minutes
The mini-mission this week is to choose one and execute it every day. Share your experiences and insights with me at the end of the week.
Email someone and express genuine gratitude.
Write a small piece of wisdom (150 words) related to your consulting field.
Make an insightful comment, or offer supportive feedback, on a LinkedIn post.
Offer someone positive feedback, then ask them a thought-provoking question.
Set up a Google Alert for keywords related to your client's industry. Check it daily.
Share a book recommendation with the reasons it is worthwhile reading.
Buy some personalised note cards. Write a brief note of encouragement and send it by post.
Remember, each small action is a potential step towards your next big breakthrough. Choose one, make it count.
