High Achievers: A Meditation for Letting Go of Control
When you’re someone who’s used to getting things done, it can feel like control is the only way forward. But deep down, you might know—holding on too tightly can create barriers and resistance.
It’s not easy to let go, especially when you’ve built so much through focus and determination.
But sometimes, control keeps us stuck, leaving little room for things to flow, or for others to step in. This meditation invites you to reflect on what it feels like to release that need. Explore your mind and see what might happen when you trust a little more.
Getting Started
Find a comfortable position, close your eyes, and take a deep, slow breath. As you exhale, let yourself settle into the present moment. Take a moment to feel grounded, letting go of any tension.
Now, think back to a time when you felt the need to control everything. Let yourself gently reflect on that experience—no need to judge, just observe.
Before the Situation
What thoughts come up as you revisit this moment? Why did you feel like you had to take charge?
Imagine being in the shoes of someone else involved. How do you think they might have felt about your actions or decisions?
Now, take a step back, as if you’re watching the situation from a distance. What do you notice about yourself and what’s happening?
During the Situation
Picture yourself right in the middle of the situation again. What do you see when you’re trying to control the outcome? How does it feel in your body?
Shift to the other person’s perspective. What might they have felt as you tried to steer things in a certain direction?
Now, step back again as a neutral observer. What do you see? How is your need for control affecting the situation and the people involved?
After the Situation
Imagine the situation is over. How do you feel now that it’s passed?
How do you think the other person feels now that it’s behind you both?
As a neutral observer, what do you notice about the overall outcome of the situation?
Take a deep breath in. As you exhale, allow yourself to release that need for control. It’s okay to trust—in yourself, in others, and in the flow of life. Imagine what possibilities might open up if you let go a little and allow others to step in.
When you’re ready, slowly open your eyes, and take this sense of trust with you as you move forward.
